Frequently Asked Questions
Some of the questions we've been asked before are listed below. If you have a question that is not answered here, please
feel free to visit our forums and ask it!
General
- What is the Alvador Project?
- The Alvador Project is a shared universe for writers of fantasy literature.
- What is a Shared Universe?
- Wikipedia defines a shared universe as "a literary
technique in which several different authors create works of fiction that share aspects such as settings or characters and that
are intended to be read as taking place in a single universe." Basically what that means is that anyone can write stories in
this setting and can contribute to the definitions of the setting itself.
- Can I submit a story?
- Absolutely. Anybody is welcome to submit a story.
- Can I write stories in Alvador for publication elsewhere?
- Sure. We have no problem with that. You own the rights to any stories you write in this setting. See our
copyright page for more information.
- Can I use characters somebody else created?
- Characters are fair game, for the most part, but the golden rule is to be polite to the other authors. The goal here is to
form a community of authors. If another author has a signature character that they use in many of their stories, you should
check with them before using their character. And it is definitely bad form to kill another author's characters.
- Can I write about the major events?
- Anybody can write about anything, but you should make a serious effort not to change the accepted history of Alvador. For
example, you should not write a story about humans on Alvador before the arrival of Pharius and his fleet.
- Can I post stories from Alvador on another website?
- If you own the story (this is generally true only if you wrote the story) then you can do whatever you want with it.
Otherwise, you should check with whoever does own the rights to the story (again, generally the author). It's their story, not
ours.
